Some people with vitiligo have found that cosmetics that cover the white patches improve their appearance and help them feel better about their appearance. A person may need to experiment with several brands of concealing cosmetics before finding the product that works best.
The goal of treating vitiligo is to restore the function of the skin and to improve the patient's appearance. Patients with more extensive vitiligo, affecting >50% of body area, may consider total depigmentation of the remaining pigmented skin. This can be accomplished with hydroquinone twice daily for a period of weeks to years, which is applied until depigmentation is completed. Several therapies are available to treat milder cases of vitiligo, although many people with it choose not to pursue therapy at all.
